How to obtain a National Insurance Number (NINO)?

Posted in

You can take up employment without a NI number as long as you apply for a number once you start work. A person can work in the UK without a NI number for 6 months, but it is advisable to apply for one as soon as possible as this may affect your eligibility when applying for tax credits and other benefits.

Applications for NINO are processed at the local Job Centre in your area. You will need to fill in a form and have an interview at a Jobcentre, where an interpreter can be arranged on request.  You will be asked to provide certain documents as proof of identity. eg. Passport, National Identity card, Birth certificate, Residence or naturalization documents, Pay slips, Work permit.
